How to Describe Your Personal Style

If someone asked you to describe your personal style in a few words, what would you say? For many people, this question feels almost impossible. We wear clothes every day, but putting our “style” into words can feel intimidating. Is it minimalist, vintage, bohemian, sporty, classic, or something else entirely? And what if it changes depending on the day?

The good news is: describing your personal style isn’t about forcing yourself into a box. It’s about finding language that reflects who you are, how you want to feel, and what you want to express. Here’s how to do it.

I could condense this whole blog post down into 3 small words: trust your gut. Listen to the little voice inside your head and in your belly that tells you you love something, the comfort, the pattern, the cut, and lean into it. Wear those pieces and keep following your gut until you have developed a style that only you have. This is what changed me into a clothes-loving girlie who feels good in what she wears.

But you are here for more detail than that, I'm sure.

Step 1: Look at What You Actually Wear

The first step is to study your own wardrobe. Forget the clothes you wish you wore or the trends you admire from afar. Focus on the pieces you reach for most often.

  • What colours dominate your closet?

  • Which fabrics feel the most comfortable on your skin?

  • Do you gravitate toward fitted shapes, flowy silhouettes, or something in between?

For example, if you realise you’re always choosing neutral colours and structured pieces, that says something about your style. If your go-to outfits are cosy sweaters and sneakers, that says something too. Your everyday choices are clues to your true preferences.

Step 2: Notice How Clothes Make You Feel

Style isn’t only about how you look - it’s also about how you feel in your clothes. Confidence and comfort in what you wear is at least 30% of the overall vibe you give off. Think about the last time you wore something that made you feel powerful, beautiful, or completely yourself. What was it about that outfit? Was it the cut, the colour, or the overall vibe?

Describing your style in terms of feelings can be just as useful as describing it with fashion terms. For instance:

These emotional cues will guide you better than any trend ever could.

Step 3: Collect Inspiration (and Filter It)

Pinterest boards, Instagram saves, and mood collages can help you visualise your taste. But the key isn’t just collecting images - it’s filtering them.

Look through your saved photos and ask:

  • What keeps repeating?

  • Do you see consistent colours or patterns?

  • Are the silhouettes structured or loose?

  • Do you like outfits that look playful, serious, glamorous, or casual?

Even if your inspiration seems all over the place, you’ll probably notice common threads. Those repeating elements are the heart of your personal style.

Step 4: Choose Words That Fit You

Now it’s time to put your style into words. Think of three to five adjectives that describe the look and feel of your outfits. These can be fashion-oriented or emotion-oriented.

Examples:

The exact words don’t matter as much as how they help you capture your vibe. When you’re shopping or getting dressed, you can ask: Does this fit my three style words? If it doesn’t, add another word to your list for what you love about this new item.

Step 5: Acknowledge That Style Evolves

Don’t worry if your description doesn’t feel permanent. Style isn’t fixed - it grows with you. The words you use today may not apply in five years, and that’s okay. Your style should reflect who you are right now, not who you were in the past or who you think you should be.

If you’ve ever looked back on old photos and laughed at your outfit choices, that’s proof that style evolves. And that’s part of the fun.

Step 6: Practice Saying It Out Loud

Finally, try practising your description. Imagine a friend asking: “What’s your personal style?” How would you answer in one or two sentences?

For example:

  • “I’d say my style is casual but polished - I like comfortable basics with a few structured pieces.”

  • My style is playful and bold - I love bright colours and mixing patterns.”

  • “I keep my style minimal and classic - lots of neutrals, clean lines, and simple accessories.”

When you can sum it up like this, you’ll feel more confident in your choices and clearer about what fits you.

Final Thoughts

Describing your personal style doesn’t mean boxing yourself in. It’s about creating a compass to guide you. Look at what you actually wear, notice how clothes make you feel, filter your inspiration, and choose words that reflect both your taste and your values.

Remember, your style can - and should - change as you grow. What matters is that the words you choose today help you feel more authentic in the way you dress. Because in the end, the best description of your style is simple: it’s the one that makes you feel like yourself.
